What a cookie is

A cookie is a small piece of text a website asks your browser to store. Your browser sends it back to that site on later visits. Sites use cookies to keep you signed in, remember a setting, count visits, or follow you from site to site.

Browsers can also store data in other ways, such as local storage and session storage. This page covers those too.

Essential and analytics cookies

Cookies generally fall into two groups:

• Essential cookies are needed for a site to work, for example to keep you signed in or keep items in a cart. They do not need your consent.
• Analytics and other non-essential cookies count visits, measure how a site is used, or support advertising. In the EU and the UK a site must ask for your consent before it sets them.

Cookies this site sets

None. This site has no sign-in, no cart and no analytics, so there is nothing for a cookie to remember. Our hosting does not set any cookie either.

We checked this in the site's code and server responses, rather than assuming it. No page or script on the site reads or writes cookies or session storage, and the server sends no cookie with its responses. The contact form posts to a script on our own server that starts no session and sets no cookie.

Because the site sets no non-essential cookies, there is no cookie consent banner. There is nothing to consent to.

Your light or dark theme choice

The button in the site header switches between a light and a dark theme. When you click it, your browser saves your choice in local storage so the next page opens in the same theme.

• Name: aisf-theme
• Value: the word "light" or "dark", nothing else
• When it is set: only when you click the theme button
• Where it goes: nowhere. It stays on your device and is never sent to us.
• How long it lasts: until you clear your browser's site data

This is a setting you asked for, so it counts as essential and needs no consent. If you never click the button, nothing is saved and the site follows your device's light or dark setting.

Third-party scripts, fonts and embeds

This site loads nothing from other companies. There are:

• no analytics or tag manager scripts;
• no advertising or social media pixels;
• no chat widgets;
• no embedded videos, maps or forms; and
• no third-party fonts. The fonts are served from our own server.

Links to other websites take you off this site. Those sites have their own cookie policies.

Server logs

Serving a page still leaves a record on our server: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested and your browser type. This is not a cookie, and nothing is stored on your device. The privacy policy explains what the logs hold and how long they are kept.

How to control cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you see, block and delete cookies. You can block all cookies for this site and it will work exactly the same, because it does not use any. If you also block site data, the theme button still works, but your choice is not remembered between pages. The settings are usually found here:

• Chrome: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies or Site settings.
• Firefox: Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Cookies and Site Data.
• Safari: Settings or Preferences, then Privacy.
• Edge: Settings, then Cookies and site permissions.

If this changes

If we ever add analytics or any other non-essential cookie, we will update this page and the privacy policy first. We will also add a consent banner that blocks those cookies until you agree to them.
